Insurance
Please bring a picture ID and have your most recent insurance card(s) and information on additional insurance plan(s) readily available upon visit or admission. This will alleviate the possibility of billing errors and delays. We understand that insurance coverage may change at some point. Patients are encouraged to call their insurance company(ies) to inform them of any changes in their insurance plan(s).
Billing
In addition to receiving a bill from Hilo Benioff Medical Center, patients may receive separate bills from our provider partners. When a physician specialist performs these services, he/she is generally required to submit their bill separately from the hospital’s bill. For example, if you came to our Emergency Department and had a x-ray, you may receive a bill from Hilo Benioff Medical Center for hospital services, a bill from the Emergency Department physician for his/her services and a bill from the radiologist for interpreting the x-rays. This is standard practice for all hospitals.
Price Transparency Policy “Affordable Care Act, Section 2718(e)”
This policy allows the public to view East Hawaii Region Hospital’s (Hilo Benioff Medical Center, Hale Ho’ola Hamakua and Kau Hospital) standard charges in compliance with the Affordable Care Act, Section 2718(e) of the Public Health Service Act. It is intended to promote transparency for patients to understand their potential financial liability for services obtained at EHR and to allow comparison for similar services with hospitals.
However, it should be noted that hospital charge masters are lengthy and complex documents and do not provide information at a level necessarily conducive for this purpose. Therefore, additional information, as outlined in the Standard Charges page, will be provided to patients seeking price estimates.
No Surprises Act Notice “Public Health Services Act Notice, Section 2799B-3”
This policy protects you from balance billing during emergency services and certain services at an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center.

What is “balance billing” (sometimes called “surprise billing”)?
When you see a doctor or other health care provider, you may owe certain out-of-pocket costs, such as a copayment, coinsurance, and/or a deductible. You may have other costs or have to pay the entire bill if you see a provider or visit a health care facility that isn’t in your health plan’s network.
“Out-of-network” describes providers and facilities that haven’t signed a contract with your health plan. Out-of-network providers may be permitted to bill you for the difference between what your plan agreed to pay and the full amount charged for a service. This is called “balance billing.” This amount is likely more than in-network costs for the same service and might not count toward your annual out-of-pocket limit.
“Surprise billing” is an unexpected balance bill. This can happen when you can’t control who is involved in your care—like when you have an emergency or when you schedule a visit at an in- network facility but are unexpectedly treated by an out-of-network provider.
